From the Tech-Simplified Desk of Rucheli:
Welcome to another edition of Systeme.io Sundays, coming to you live from Vancouver as I wrap up the final stretch of our Alaska getaway! Even with the stunning mountains and ocean views competing for my attention, I couldn't skip our weekly tech date.
There's something refreshing about stepping away from your business for a bit - it gives you that bird's eye perspective that's hard to get when you're in the day-to-day grind. And speaking of perspective, today I'm pulling back the curtain on my email marketing numbers - the good, the bad, and the "oh no, did I really just send that to my ENTIRE list?!" moments.
Because sometimes the best way to learn isn't from polished perfection, but from someone willing to show you their messy middle. So let's dive in!
Last week, I was chatting with a client who was absolutely devastated about her "terrible" 22% email open rate. She was ready to throw in the towel on her entire business model because "clearly nobody cares about what I have to say."
Hold up. Full stop.
This is the email marketing equivalent of comparing your behind-the-scenes to someone else's highlight reel. You know, like scrolling through Instagram at 11pm in your decade-old pajamas with toothpaste on your shirt while looking at influencers with their perfect sunrise yoga poses.
So I decided it's time for some radical transparency. Here are my ACTUAL email stats from the past 12 months:
Current Subscribers on my list: 4,635 (cleared out a bunch of inactives a few weeks back)
Emails sent in the last year: 261,982
Average open rate: 30.9% (but ranges from 17% to 48% depending on the email)
My highest performing subject line to my full list: "I'm closing the doors on this tomorrow" (48% open rate)
My lowest performing subject line: "The tech secrets your online biz needs to know" (a dismal 17% - people obviously didn't care to know them 😂)
Average click rate: 2.7% (again, with huge variations)
Unsubscribe rate: About 0.3% per email (which means yes, people leave EVERY time I email)
Number of times I've sent an email with an embarrassing typo: 17 (that I know of)
Number of emails sent to the wrong segment: 3 (including one very awkward apology)
Here's what's fascinating: some of my MOST profitable emails had "meh" open rates. And some emails with sky-high open rates led to crickets when it came to actual sales.
The truth about email marketing that nobody talks about is this: consistency matters more than perfection.
When I first started my online business, I was obsessed with optimizing every little detail. I'd spend HOURS crafting the "perfect" email, only to be crushed when it didn't perform as expected. I was like a helicopter parent hovering over my email stats, refreshing the analytics every 20 minutes.
But after sending hundreds of emails (and making plenty of mistakes along the way), I've learned that what matters isn't having perfect stats – it's showing up consistently in your subscribers' inboxes with value.
And here's where Systeme.io has been a game-changer for my email marketing: instead of getting lost in complex automations and segmentation rules that require a PhD to understand, I can focus on what actually matters – writing emails that connect with my audience.
The simplicity of Systeme.io's email marketing has freed me from tech overwhelm and given me back the mental bandwidth to focus on connection rather than perfection.
🧠 Tech Simplification Challenge
This week, I challenge you to audit your last 5 email subject lines. Were they clear or clever? Personal or promotional? Long or short?
Make note of which ones got the best open rates, then use that data to craft your next email. And speaking of subject lines, next week I'll be sharing my go-to subject line formulas that consistently get opens (including the exact template I used for my highest-performing email ever).
Want a head start? Try this for your next email: "[First name], quick question about [topic relevant to your audience]" – simple but surprisingly effective!
Comment below and let me know what your best-performing subject line has been so far – I'm genuinely curious!
